I love this verse, but I need it more than ever right now as a reminder that the Christian life is a race; not a sprint, but a marathon. And as any runner knows, running can flat out make you weary at times.  So, too, life can make us weary- especially life in a fallen world where any manner of woes can trip us up, leaving us feeling discouraged and defeated.

But, the Christian’s life is a supernatural life, with the life of Christ indwelling every believer.  Thanks be to God for  the power of the Holy Spirit to help us keep on keepin’ on when we feel like throwing in the towel.  🙂   And thanks be to God not only for strength, power and wisdom to endure the race, but for the precious experience of joy to keep on running for His glory.  Jesus experienced great joy as He endured the cross on our behalf, knowing what finishing His “race” would accomplish for us.  And it is precisely that same kind of joy that keeps the true follower of Christ running “with endurance the race set out” for her or him.

In a world that is running in so many different directions, take heart in knowing that your race was chosen specifically for you; and you’ve been given everything you need in Christ to keep on running strong to the finish!

I don’t know any true follower of Christ who has come to the end of his or her life and wished they’d run in a different race.  He is so worth going the distance for!

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, we must get rid of every weight and the sin that clings so closely, and run with endurance the race set out for us, keeping our eyes fixed on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of our faith. For the joy set out for him he endured the cross, disregarding its shame, and has taken his seat at the right hand of the throne of God.Think of him who endured such opposition against himself by sinners, so that you may not grow weary in your souls and give up.
