*Show Notes are at the end of the transcript.

Hey there, and come on in for this kickoff episode of the Life-on-Life Podcast! I am so excited that you’re here and that we are finally doing this! This has been about a three-year project that we’ve dreamed about, prayed over and planned for after getting a lot of feedback from women like you who wanted practical teaching and truth and the how-to kind of things of walking out their faith in everyday life.

So that’s why we’re here and that’s what we’re here to do: Bringing life and faith together and walking it out together with you as best we can through each podcast episode. And it’s so much more fun when we grab a buddy and walk together, and I’ve got a buddy joining me behind the scenes and occasionally on the show and that is my dear friend Michelle Schroeder.

She is my co laborer and my collaborator and really the one doing the heavy lifting and we’ve worked together for about 10 years in women’s ministry and we both have a heart for this same thing. And that is helping women like you and women like us walk together in our faith and disciple one another in Life-on-Life relationships. So, come on in and join us and let’s talk about the difference that Jesus is making in our lives.

And as we get rolling here, I’m going to kick out a big question to you. What are you most passionate about? And if you could do anything you wanted to do, if money was not a problem and you knew you wouldn’t fail at it, what would you do? That is the question that my husband, John Tolson asked me on our first date! I thought maybe it was a trick question, but for sure it was definitely a loaded question and it was crazy.

I had never even heard that question asked that way before, especially on a date. And I don’t think anyone in my life had ever asked me that question. And I realized that question was giving me permission to dream. And so very few of us really ever give ourselves permission or get permission to dream. But as I thought about it for just a few seconds, my gut response, my heart response was really the only thing I’m passionate about is Jesus. And if I could do anything, I would teach women and help women to know God and to fall in love with Jesus and to follow him all the days of their life. And thinking back on it, when I was really confessing that day was the God given dream in my heart, but also the God given purpose and mission statement for my life. Little did I know 16 months later I would marry that guy and that my response to his question would become not only a reality, but it would become my life’s work, my vocation.

And that’s what I do. And that’s what I’ve done for over the last 22 years as I’ve worked in a ministry of disciple-making the last 18 alongside my husband. I’ve discipled women and I’ve invested in them through teaching the scriptures, through writing and teaching Bible studies, speaking to groups and through one-on-one life-on-life, disciple-making. My goal has always been the same thing, to help women to know God, to fall in love with Jesus and to follow Jesus and to walk it out with them in their everyday life. And so this podcast, what we’re launching today was born out of my desire to help women do just that. This is a platform for disciple-making to train and equip you in your faith and help you to know God and to love him with all you’ve got. Because I really do believe that when we do, when we are sold out to love him like that, then we want to give him away.

We want to give everything we’ve got from him away. We want to pass that on to pay it forward in to help raise up another woman in the faith so she can do the same thing. And you know as well as I do that we talk about the things and the ones that we love the most. And there’s not much, if anything, we wouldn’t do for the object of our greatest affection. As I’ve interacted with women over the years and in spending precious time with them, opening up our hearts over a cup of coffee and sharing a box of Kleenex and getting down to the nitty gritty truth of life, there are a few things I keep hearing over and over again. Mostly they’ll say to me, Punky, I go to church, I go to Bible studies, but I don’t have anybody in my life to really show me how it all works, how it all makes practical sense in my life.

They’ll tell me that they know how to find the answers in the Bible to fill in the blanks in their workbooks, but that can’t work it into the blanks in their life and they struggle. They struggle to figure out how to take the promises and the precepts in the scriptures and put them to use in the circumstances of their life. What they’re asking is to see what the Bible looks like, how it dresses up on a real woman in this day and age when she’s got all kinds of stuff swirling around her head, what they’re asking for is something I feel is critical and that is someone to disciple them, to help them walk it out, to walk out their faith, someone to give them the two things that I believe are essential and critical in any relationship, especially in raising up women in their faith and that is time and truth, the truth of God’s word, and then someone to come alongside and invest the time in them to show them how Jesus makes the biggest and most and profound difference in life.

Jesus left us with a final command to go and make disciples. It’s in Matthew 28:18-20 and it was the last thing he said before he went to go be with the Father. It wasn’t just a command for those 12 disciples that were right there, but it is a command for every one of us who came after them. Jesus modeled out for us as he modeled out for them, the way to do life together and faith together through life-on-life relationships.

“Life-On-Life.” It’s a term I heard Dr. Bill Bright and his wife, Vonette, use. They were founders of Campus Crusade for Christ, now called Cru. And they were dear friends of ours in Orlando. Life-on-Life is transferring truth, the truth of God through relationships. And that’s exactly what Jesus did throughout the Bible. You see God interacting with his people and them experiencing relationship with him.

True relationship. I mean, look at the four gospels and you see Jesus doing the same thing. You see them walking with people, talking with people, teaching and touching and comforting, rebuking people, eating meals with people and doing relationship life-on-life with them, equipping them to live a full life of faith on this planet. So that is the heart of this podcast and the work that we do here:  To equip you to know Jesus, to love Jesus and to follow him and live a life of faith, passing it on through authentic life-on-life, relationships. And y’all, it’s really not complicated. Jesus didn’t overcomplicate things for us, but I think a lot of people, a lot of us might feel like, Oh gosh, I don’t know the Bible all that well, so I can’t help anyone else. Well, I’m here to tell you, if you’ve been walking with the Lord for any length of time, you most likely have learned something.

So pass along what you do know and be willing and be committed to keep growing in your own faith. What I’ve done for decades is to simply open my front door and say, “C’mon in!” and I’d invite women in to sit on my couch or at the kitchen table with a cup of coffee or tea and our Bibles, and then we talk. I listen. I try to listen with my heart and then I encourage them with truth from God’s word, making it practical by giving them some life tools and how it can work in their particular circumstances. And then I’d showed them what it looks like in my own life, how it worked for me because honestly we can’t teach anybody what we don’t know and we can’t pass along truth like that if we haven’t actually worked it into our own life. And I want to be clear that on this podcast and in anything I teach or write, I will be true to God’s word by his grace what I’m going to pass along to you.

What Michelle is going to pass along to you is biblical truth because we believe that the only true truth is the word of God. It’s the one truth that never ever changes because God never ever changes. And his truth has stood the test of time and eternity. There are a lot of popular books and popular teaching out there that offer up some really good things in terms of helping people – a lot of self-help. And it’s good and interesting stuff, but it can only take you so far because it’s incomplete information and it’s incomplete help and it can’t fully help you if Jesus isn’t part of the equation. But we’re not passing along self-help to you through this podcast. We are passing along true help that comes in the person of Jesus Christ and in his word, and as I like to say, help is a person and help has a name and his name is Jesus. I believe his truth is the only thing that works because I believe that the Bible is the only thing that works and can actually help everybody.

Jesus is the only one who can do anything about everything that concerns you and me.So what Life-On-Life relationships are really all about is walking together, talking, laughing, crying, praying together, and wrestling through the hard things of life with the word of God is our guide with his truth and having honest conversations and with the help of Jesus and with his word, we become stronger. We become braver and better for having been together with him. Okay? Friends, like I said, this podcast is for you. It’s to help you grow in your faith and love for Jesus so that you can help another woman grow in her faith and in her love for Jesus and keep on doing that for the rest of your life. It’s the way the faith life was meant to be lived together, so what I encourage you to do is to make the most of this podcast and take what we’ve talked about here and share it with a friend or take it to your small group or lunch group at the office and continue the conversation together.

Talk about what we’ve just unpacked here and then follow the action prompts and questions at the end of each week’s episode. For instance, this week, think through and talk about that question. John asked me on our first date and we’ll have that for you in the show notes. What are you passionate about? What’s your dream? Give yourself permission to dream. Share it with a friend or in your group and then dare to dream together. Take the risk and actually write some things down. Pray for one another about those things and see where God takes it. We’ll circle back to this question in coming episodes, but before I leave you today, I want to read something to you from Hebrews 10:23-25 and it says this, “Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful. And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.”

This is one of the best passages for running together in life-on-life relationships for stirring one another up to love, and to get after the good work of using our gifts to serve God, encouraging one another to just keep after it… but listen to how it’s recorded in the passion translation. This is so good y’all.“So now we must cling tightly to the hope that lives within us. Knowing that God always keeps his promises, discover creative ways to encourage others and to motivate them towards acts of compassion, doing beautiful works as expressions of love. This is not the time to pull away and neglect meeting together as some have formed the habit of doing because we need each other. In fact, we should come together even more frequently, eager to encourage and urge each other onward as we anticipate that day dawning.”

We need each other, and we have to keep meeting together! I hope this is a place that you feel that you can come every week and meet together here with us. I invite you back each week to meet here and it would be my great honor and a whole lot of fun to share life with you and show you how Jesus makes them most beautiful and profound difference in life. Okay, that’s that for that and remember that you are greatly and dearly loved by the King!
