13 Mar God Exists
What comes naturally to me— in my thinking, in my doing, and in my being— is that: I exist.
I am keenly aware of myself. If I’m being honest, consumed most with myself: how I feel, how I think, how I look, what I will wear, what I want to eat, what I want to do… But enough about me; let’s talk about you! What do you think about me?
You know how it goes.
Henri Nouwen writes, “My own existence fills me, and wherever I turn I find myself again locked in my own self-awareness: I exist” (Show Me the Way, p.36). In other words, I can’t get away from myself. And I don’t want to. A five second scroll on social media makes this fact abundantly clear: “Look at me. Here I am! I exist! “
We are far too self-aware.
A self-aware self (overly aware of my existence) is one with me at the center, where everything starts from me and goes back to— you guessed it— me.
I’m not talking about an awareness you have when you’ve hurt someone, or when you’ve shown kindness to someone. Those are “convictions” of the Holy Spirit in us, quickening us to be spiritually aware of our character, our actions, and the needs of others. I’m talking about chronic awareness of self that reinforces a dangerous belief that I am central and therefore my questions, answers and decisions start and end with me, and that the more aware of myself I become, the more deeply within myself I look (the more self-help books I read), by golly, I’ll find what I’m looking for.
But a God-centered life is one in which we believe that God exists, where we live every aspect of our life from that point, with God in His rightful place, at the center. Everything starts and ends with the One who is the Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. God, who started everything and who finishes what he starts, is the One who planned you, built you, died for you, rescued you and loves you! Do you think that He would only give you a mediocre life, leave you struggling, asking questions and searching for truth—without answers? No! He died for you to give you TRUE LIFE and Truth by which to live it to the fullest—through His Son, Jesus Christ– who lives…who EXISTS in the life of every believer!
ACTION STEPS:
To say with all that we have, think, feel, and are: “God exists“ is the most world-shattering statement that a human being can make.”
So, the FIRST question is not “Who am I, Lord?” but, “Who are You, Lord?”
Your response is to listen and let Him tell you. Because every question you have finds its answer in this: God exists.
And when we live with God at the center, keenly aware that it is “in Him, we live and move and exist” (Acts 17:28), then life is lived as it should be.
I love y’all!
