In Matthew 7:24-27, Jesus tells the story of two very different builders who built their lives on two very different foundations: rock and sand. The rock represents the word of God– a stable, secure, firm foundation from which to build upon. The sand represents anything other than the word of God. It could be culture, philosophy, trends– whatever it is, it’s weak and flimsy and not firm at all.⠀

Now notice that BOTH builders incurred a storm. The storm hit both of them, but one builder survived that storm and was held firm, and the other… well, his house collapsed.⠀

So, which foundation are you building on presently in your life? If you don’t stand on the rock of God’s word– if you don’t burrow down and build deep roots into God’s truth and let that become the foundation in your life– you will not stand firm in your faith when the storm hits.⠀

How do we make the word of God the foundation of our lives? Well, we do it by DOING what God’s word SAYS to do. Remember the instruction we read about the builders was that they either 1) heard the word and did what it said, or 2) they heard the word and disobeyed it.⠀

So, this is all about obedience to God’s word: doing what God says to do. When God’s word “says so” then we “do so.” When God’s word says to pray, we pray. When God’s word says to go, then we go. When God’s word says to forgive, we forgive.⠀

We work the word of God into our lives by doing what God says to do: hearing the word and doing the word.⠀

“Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock. And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it.” Matthew 7:24-27 ESV⠀
