31 May May’s Recap: A Matter of the Heart

Just when you think things couldn’t get worse, they got worse. Another enemy has reared its head. It’s not a new one or an invisible one. This enemy has been around forever— a pandemic that has spread disease and spewed a deadly venom that’s been carried through generations, infecting billions of lives across this planet. It’s sinister. It’s dark. It will catch you off guard. You could be carrier and not even realize you have until you take the test. The enemy? He goes by the names racist, prejudice, privileged, elitist, injustice, hatred … but his surname is Evil— and he has infected our hearts, blinding them to what God has created as good and beautiful and perfectly colored.

God is not colorblind. It would be absurd to think that God, who created people in His own image with different colored skin, would be blind to what He created. Even more absurd is to surmise that colorblindness is the solution for racial unity. It’s not an optic issue; it’s a heart issue. Our eyes see what our heart believes.

God created men and women in His own image…people of different sizes shapes and colors. Beautiful colors of varying shades, with absolutely no hierarchy of color assigned. Just beautiful colors of beautiful people, created in His beautiful image, all dearly loved and “precious in His sight”.

Yes, we desperately need our eyes fixed. We need new vision. I’m not talking about a kind of new vision where we don’t see color, but true, pure vision where blindness has been removed.

It’s blindness that has kept us from seeing people as they really are: as God’s image-bearers (Genesis 1:26-28). But it’s a blindness of the heart…the dullness of heart that Jesus describes in Matthew ‪13:14-15‬ that hardens the heart and blinds the eyes like spiritual cataracts.

The issues at the center of our present circumstances are a matter of the heart. And the only way the heart can be changed is by the One who made it. The only way our sight can be restored is if our heart is circumcised of blindness and captivated by the love of Christ for his image-bearers.

But we have to start with our own hearts, y’all. Do it! Start with your own heart today and pray as David did, “Search me [thoroughly], O God, and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts! And see if there is any wicked or hurtful way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting” Psalm 139:23-24.

Pray. Let God search your heart. Whatever He tells you to do, do it.

And don’t forget that you are greatly and dearly loved by the King!
