One Verse for 2023

It’s a brand-new year! We’ve got brand-new journals, 2023 calendars and daily planners…and lots of us are selecting a new word to focus our life on in 2023—and that’s all well and good.

Words are powerful—and there are no more powerful words than those contained in the Word of God. So, this year I invite you to join me in memorizing ONE VERSE from the Bible for 2023!

And here’s why—

I was inspired by a video a friend recently sent to me of a guy asking random people in stores if they could quote one Bible verse—and if they could, he’d give them a sum of money… $50, $100, even $500! Most people said no and walked on by; some people scratched their heads and sheepishly looked around and shrugged their shoulders; others were able to say a few words that at least sounded Biblical; and then one young woman broke out in a full “preach” of Psalm 23 with hands in the air!

It’s not surprising that so few people can quote a verse from the Bible. Research shows that most professing evangelical Christians don’t believe that the Bible is the actual Word of God—nor do they read the Bible. So, if a person doesn’t believe the Bible is true—then they won’t hold God’s Word to be what it is—the living and active, powerful Word of God that is able to change us.

A Powerful Practice!

Meditating on and memorizing Scripture can be a bit intimidating. Nevertheless— it’s a powerful practice! Because God’s Word is full of living and active power, and because it accomplishes what God intends (Isiah 55:11), and even hiding one verse of God’s Word in our heart can be life-changing and bring breakthrough!

Are you in?

If you’re up for this—and I hope you are—take the next 2 or 3 weeks to prayerfully and thoughtfully consider what verse to memorize and live out in 2023.

  • Invite the Lord into the process and ask Him what verse He wants to put on your heart and into your life this year.
  • Consider what’s going on in your life right now; memorizing a verse that speaks to your circumstances, or that challenges you in some area of spiritual growth, is key.
  • Do a word search on www.biblegateway.com to narrow down verses on a particular topic (ie- faith, courage, perseverance, fear, hope…).
  • Look through one of your devotionals and see what verses you may have highlighted over the past year(s).

One verse for the year is something I’ve done on and off for several years—writing the verse out on the cover of my prayer journal where I can see it, pray it, and work it into my daily life. Though I haven’t done it perfectly—and I’ve not always been as consistent—this year I’m committing to intentionally live this one verse out and work it into my life in every way possible. I sure hope you’ll join me…and let me know what verse God puts on your heart, and I’ll let you know mine! In the meantime, I’m praying for you and your Word from God’s Word for 2023!

Thank you for letting me into your inbox each month so I can encourage you and tell you how much I love you. Not only do I love you, but you are greatly and dearly loved by the King!

Don’t you ever forget it!

I love y’all!
