Pink Lemonade

So, what do most 10-year-old kids like to do on a Saturday afternoon?  Watch TV, play computer games, text friends on their cell phones… maybe get into their parents’ hair or a little trouble?

Not my niece, Lily!  She is one cool chick… quite extraordinary if I do say ever-so-unbiasedly myself.  And she always has been.  It’s the truth.  When she was about 7 years old, she mused one day about the past and the future and profoundly exclaimed, “There is the past, the “gift” and the future!”

Think about it.

Talk about making the most of now!  On a cold, blustery day in the heart of New York City, when most kids would be inside doing anything else, she and three of her friends, pitched a table on the sidewalks of Manhattan and sold PINK LEMONADE to raise money to help fight breast cancer!

This is the second year that Lily and her buddies took their own free time to take up a cause greater than themselves. This year, however, it had a more personal meaning for Lily since my diagnosis last May.

Mind you, no one told the girls to do this, but they were inspired by one of the mom’s whose close friend is a “Survivor”.  So the girls took up the cause, made a plan, made the lemonade, made the poster… and made it all happen!

These cool chicks are true New Yorkers in every way – they got out there and hustled pink lemonade at a buck a cup and, get this, they raised $347.00 in 2 ½ hours to help find a cure for beast cancer through the Young Survival Coalition!!!  Awesome?  Fantastic?  Extraordinary?  I’m just sayin’…

Hustling Pink Lemonade for The Cure! You go girls!!

The best part was that they called me from their pink lemonade post and all of them got on the phone to scream, “WE LOVE YOU, AUNT PUNKY!!!  YOU ROCK!!!”

They sure knew how to make a bald woman feel great!  I get teary just thinking about it.

And how ‘bout you?  Got a cause greater than yourself?  Jesus said, “There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends” (John 15:13 NLT).  Go ahead, get outside yourself, give your life away and make the most of now!  After all, today is a “gift”.

Pressing on in Him!
