Seek God’s Face

One of the things that I love to do is to use God’s word to dialogue with him. It’s not the only way to pray, but it’s one way that I think is really powerful and effective– because you’re taking the very words of God and praying them back to him.

I learned this a long time ago through a couple of different people, and I started to adapt it and adopt it into my own life. Praying God’s Word really helped me get to know him better. When I would read that the Lord wanted me to do something, then I would pray to do that– and I would pray to want to do that.

I had this habit of always running to God with what I needed (and certainly God wants us to come to him with everything that’s on our heart and to tell him what we need… see Phil. 4:8) but, so often we only seek his hand.

We come to God and ask him for what we want, while what God wants is for us to get to know him. And in knowing who God is, we will come to know who we are. So, I’m going to share with you what I did so that you can practice praying the Scriptures, too! As you read the scriptures, see if there is something in particular that strikes your heart. If so, focus on that because I believe that’s the Holy Spirit stirring you and prompting you to pay attention to that and pray it.

Example 1:
In Ephesians 1:17, Paul says, “I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better.”

Personal prayer:
“God, thank you for the spirit of wisdom and revelation you’ve given to me as a child of yours. Each time I open up your word, help me to know you better. As I read your word today, show me who you are.”

Example 2:
Proverbs 3:5-6, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.”

The thing that strikes me is “do not lean on your own understanding, but in all your ways, acknowledge God.” And I wonder, how many people do I go to first or lean on first before I ever take what’s on my heart and my concerns in life to God?

Personal prayer:
“Lord, I’m sorry that I’m so quick to search for an answer through someone else before I ever pick up my Bible and talk to you about it and share with you what’s on my heart.”

So, that’s what I want you to try! Pick a verse and read it through a few times. Pay attention to what strikes your heart, write it down, and then turn it into a prayer back to God. This is how you’re going to have conversation with him.
