You’re a Piece of Work

The Apostle Paul tells us we are God’s masterpieces, created in Christ Jesus, to do good works that he prepared beforehand so that we would do them. You may have heard this so many times before but stop and think about that. We are God’s masterpiece! That word masterpiece is also translated in some of your Bibles as “handiwork or workmanship” and all of those words mean the same Greek word. It’s a pretty word, poiema, which is where we get our English word, poem.

So think about “masterpiece” in terms of us being a poem that God wrote– or is continuing to write– as something made. And in this context, we are the something that has been made by God himself. So, the next time somebody calls you “a piece of work” you tell ’em: Right On! I am a piece of work! You are literally a piece of work– a master’s work. You are the master’s masterpiece!

What exactly is a masterpiece? A masterpiece, by definition, is a work of outstanding artistry done with extraordinary skill and workmanship. A masterpiece is timeless. There’s no expiration date on a masterpiece’s beauty or its effectiveness. I mean, think about it… People travel all over the world, just to behold, masterpieces of art in different countries. A masterpiece only increases in value as it ages, it doesn’t diminish in value, beauty, or effectiveness.

But remember, there are two parts to this verse in Ephesians 2:10… First, we are God’s masterpiece, and he has created us a new in Christ Jesus. Second, so we can do the good works he planned for us long ago. What has God created you to do? Watch or listen to Episode 77 | Created for More (Part 1) by clicking here.
